MacBook Pro 16 inch review: Design
The new MacBook Pro has a retro feel to it. Apple has abandoned its preoccupation with thin chassis in favor of this notebook’s increased functionality, connections, and power. It’s not enormous, but it’s made with practicality, not just aesthetics, in mind. It’s uncommon for me to praise the thickening of laptops, but the MacBook Pro needed this. Even though it has rather blocky edges, all the corners are still rounded. The metal construction is sparse except from the tone-on-tone mirror sheen of Apple’s logo. (Those who hoped Apple would go back to a light-up icon will have to wait some more.) In the hands, the whole thing feels sturdy. Under the lid, there have been some significant alterations. A notch, similar to the one on recent iPhones, barely breaks up the 16.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR display. See more below about this. The top corners of the screen are rounded, while the bottom corners are squared off, which is an interesting design choice. Full-sized function keys have replaced the Touch Bar, and Touch ID is now located on the power button. Each side of the keyboard has speaker grilles, and the enormous touchpad is located directly beneath the keyboard, as you might anticipate. MagSafe charging is back on the left side in the shape of MagSafe 3. We’re thrilled! We have fallen over enough laptop chargers to understand the importance of this when done correctly. Display
The new mini-LED display is one of the crowning features of the new MacBook Pro. Only one app required more, and that was Cinema 4D, which has so many options that adding a notch would not really help. The system divides them nicely, pushing errant items over to the other side of the notch, when there are too many or if you scale the interface larger. Even though it’s not anyone’s preferred design, the fact that the mouse moves beneath the notch makes everything feel seamless and unimportant. However, there have been instances of custom Menu bar tools damaging it, particularly if you fill it with widgets and icons from the right side, so be aware that you might want to dial it down if that’s your thing. With the new lighting technology, the screen can achieve 1,000 nits of full-screen HDR brightness with HDR content and 1,600 nits of peak HDR brightness (in a very narrow window). Though these do, of course, look simply great on it, HDR material doesn’t just refer to movies on iTunes or other services. In programmes like Premiere Pro and Cinema 4D, you can view scenes in HDR in real-time. The screen can increase in size to display a broader dynamic range as long as the app is compatible with it.
Keyboard and touchpad
Apple maintains its recognizable keyboard with the traditional scissor keys, and the new keyboard’s typing experience is essentially identical to that of the previous MBP 16 model. Just a tiny bit additional noise is added to the keystroke. The keyboard, which is also found in past MacBook models, continues to impress with a very crisp and even feedback, but given the thicker base unit, we would have preferred to see greater key travel. The manufacturer has switched from using the chassis color in earlier iterations to black for the area between the keys. Standard function keys were used in place of the Touch Bar on older models, and they had the same vertical height as the other keys, unlike the current MacBook Air. When it comes to keyboard illumination, which is automatically turned on and off and has extremely small intensity adjustments, Apple is still miles ahead of its competitors. Competitors typically don’t have a sensor and only offer two or three brightness levels. A ring that surrounds the Touch-ID fingerprint sensor, which is hidden behind the power button in the upper right corner, is merely a decorative touch. Because the Trackpad’s cursor control (including gestures) works flawlessly with the operating system, Apple is still the gold standard in this area. MacBook Pro 16 inch review: Audio
The 16-inch Pro features a new triple-microphone array and six new speakers that enable Dolby Atmos and spatial audio, both of which were added by Apple. The old 16-inch MacBook Pro’s six speakers were fantastic, and based on my personal experience, the new model has even greater sound. On songs like Massive Attack’s “Angel,” the bass thumps with an almost physical kick, while the treble and vocals on Muddy Waters’ “Folk Singer” sound incredibly warm and resonant. Gaming and Graphics
There’s a reason Apple doesn’t refer to the 16-inch MacBook Pro as a gaming laptop even though it has 32 GPU cores. The M1 Max may have the desire, but there isn’t enough backing. For example, browsing my Steam library clearly demonstrated this. When Apple stopped supporting 32-bit programmes, the majority of games that could run on the Mac ceased to receive updates. Some can only be found on Windows. For years, popular AAA games haven’t paid much attention to the Mac. The majority of the games we could play were independent titles or didn’t require a lot of graphics. It doesn’t mean they’re poor games, but the library is small. You can run for some titles. In our tests, Rise of The Tomb Raider—which is admittedly a little dated—played at 73.87 frames per second at 1920 x 1200; however, it operated at fewer than 30 fps at native resolution, which by our standards rendered it unplayable. The M1 Max played Dirt 4 for a brief period of time on high without any issues, even at 3456 x 2160. (to keep a 16:9 aspect ratio). Naturally, it was a little smoother at lower resolutions. MacBook Pro 16 inch review: Performance
If you spend a lot of money on the fully-loaded model, the MacBook Pro 16-inch is the most powerful MacBook ever produced. You won’t find another laptop with an 8-core Intel processor, 64GB RAM, and an 8TB SSD at that price. Sadly, we were unable to test that version; instead, we looked at the high-end base setup, which included an AMD Radeon Pro 5500M, 16GB of RAM, and a 1TB SSD. If you need a laptop for video editing, many people will choose this one because it is still a very powerful machine. It is vastly over-specced for the needs of many others. Therefore, the MacBook Pro 16-inch easily passes the benchmark tests we gave it. The processor is comparable to the 15-inch model we evaluated, however it has a slightly lower clock speed. Our Wi-Fi test runs for over 17 hours at an adjusted brightness of 150 nits and for only about 8 hours at the maximum SDR brightness. When we used full-screen mode, unlike earlier macOS releases, we noticed no difference. On our test model of the MBP 16 with the M1 Max SoC (now also under review), an HDR video at the highest brightness played for roughly 4.5 hours, which is a little longer than on the smaller MBP 14 with about 4 hours. On the other hand, a typical video with 150 nits lasts almost 17.5 hours. Fast charging is supported by the 140 W power adapter, and 50% of the capacity is available after 30 minutes. The USB-C ports can also be used to charge the MBP 16, however they do not support fast charging. On battery power, we did not observe any performance deterioration for the CPU or GPU. The price of the MacBook Pro 16-inch is arguably one of the best surprises. But hold your excitement—this isn’t a cheap laptop. Not at all.
