Guide: IGTV vs Stories: Everything you need to know
It’s no surprise that everyone loves Instagram. While a little depressing in its own way, the platform is very addictive. And to promote that addiction, IGTV launched in January. From photo posts to IGTV, Instagram has come a long way. IGTV (Instagram TV) is, in a way, a direct competitor to YouTube. You can say that it is the Instagram version of YouTube, currently the number one platform for online video content. IGTV looks like YouTube and Instagram Stories have had a baby. It has many similarities with Stories, but is very different from them. Curious about the differences? In this post, let’s see where we compare IGTV and Instagram Stories.
Life cycle
Instagram Stories have a short life. They disappear from public view after twenty-four hours unless you add them to your highlights. They remain in your archives for personal use. IGTV videos are just like normal videos, which will stay on your channel forever until you manually delete them.
Time limit
Instagram is a paradise for people who love to share images. While it allows you to post videos in stories and regular posts, both are very short lived. In Stories you can only post 15 second video (psst, here’s how to Post longer videos), normal messages may disappear up up to a minute. Even less if you want to post an extensive video. This is where IGTV helps. It has a one hour time limit for longer videos.
Separate app
When Instagram launched IGTV, they also announced a dedicated app for it. There are no significant differences between the native IGTV feature in the Instagram app and the separate app. You can comfortably enjoy the content in the separate app. On the other hand, Stories is only integrated in the Instagram app. There is no dedicated app for it.
Channels
Familiar with channels on YouTube? Now Instagram has them too, and you need a channel to upload a video. Basically, the IGTV platform is divided into channels – one for each user. You can add multiple videos to a channel. However, if you want to create a second channel, you will need a second Instagram account.
When it comes to stories, you don’t need a channel. You can post stories directly to Instagram.
User interface and navigation buttons
Stories and IGTV have a similar user interface in which gestures play an important role. When you swipe left, you’ll see the next video or an image (in the case of Stories) – this gesture is common between Stories and IGTV. And if you swipe to the right, you will see the previous content. You’ll find the Stories section at the top of it home screen where you can see stories from all users. You can tap on any story to automatically play all subsequent stories. Or you can tap the user whose story you want to view.
In the case of IGTV you have to go to the TV section by on the special button on the top. You can also go to the user profile where you can find their channel.
Once you open IGTV, the videos will start playing automatically. On the home screen, you will find videos of the users you follow. If you swipe up, you will get tabs such as Follow, Popular and Continue watching. There is also a search function once you perform the swipe up gesture.
IGTV is special and different from Stories in that you get the correct navigation buttons. This was necessary because you can have videos of duration up up to an hour. Imagine tapping repeatedly to forward a video.
Interaction
You can like and comment on IGTV videos just like in the regular posts. You can share them on Instagram via DMs. If you want to share them through another app, you can do that too using the Copy Link feature
While you can’t like or comment on Stories, you can comment and comment on them. You can also share them via DMs. And if you want to share them externally, you have to share their highlights.
Vertical videos
The feature The one thing that sets IGTV apart from YouTube is its support for vertical videos. Today, most content is viewed on smartphones, and it makes sense to optimize content for display on the phoneIn others words, vertical videos. Apparently you turn your phone or enabling automatic rotation is too much of a hassle. Likewise, Stories also focus on full screen and vertical.
Which one to use?
Obviously, there are notable differences between the two from Instagram features – IGTV and stories. If you’re more into smaller videos and like content like that, Stories is the best place to show off your talent. However, if you prefer longer videos and don’t want to create a YouTube channel, IGTV won’t disappoint.
