Guide: How to Install Software Updates on Kindle Manually
Bookerly, finally! So let’s get into it. Interested in upgrading your Kindle? Check out our Kindle Paperwhite review.
Determine the current firmware version and the device
First, let’s see what the current version of the installed firmware is. To do that, first go to the Home screen by pressing it Home button on your Kindle Paperwhite or your other Kindles with touchscreen.
Now click on the Hamburger menu button on the far right of the toolbar and select Settings. Click on the same Hamburger menu again button and select Device info. Now you can see the current firmware version in the floating box.
You also need to know the exact version of Kindle you have. If you apply a wrong update, you can terminate up damage your kindling. But there is a way to find out using the serial number. It is also available in the same Device Info menu that showed you the firmware version.
Mobileread has an extensive Wiki where it links the first 4 digits of the serial number to the correct model. Visit this page to do it yourself. To read web articles on Kindle: Did you know Kindle can help you read those long articles from the internet? You can even use Instapaper to automatically download the latest saved articles directly to your Kindle.
How to Download Update Firmware for your device
Ok, now that we know exactly what device we are using, let’s download the update file.
Now the page will say something like “yes, we have a new software update for your device.”
Scroll down until you see Download Software Update XXX. Click on it and the download will begin. This may take some time depending on your internet speed. The update file for my Kindle was 199MB.
How to Transfer the update and install it on your Kindle
Use the USB cable that came with Kindle (or another micro USB cable) to connect the Kindle to your PC or Mac. Kindle is now listed up as a drive in your file explorer.
Open the Kindle drive and drop the file in the root folder. This means that you should not create folders. Just paste or drag the file right after opening the Kindle drive. When the transfer is complete, remove the micro USB cable. Now on your Kindle, tap on it Home button, then tap the Hamburger menu button and select Settings.
Tap the Hamburger menu again button and select Update your Kindle. If the option is greyed out, it means you are using the latest version or the file was not transferred correctly.
After selecting the option, you will get a pop-upup box, select OK here. That’s it, the Kindle will now reboot and install the update.
