Change the background color directly
By default, the Photos app displays the color mode (light or dark) as specified by the operating system. But instead of changing the system color (which we’ll take a look at below) and affecting other native Windows 10 apps in the process, the Photos app includes the built-in switches that you can use to quickly switch between both modes. Step 1: Launch the Photos app, then click the horizontal ellipsis (three dots) icon in the top right corner of the window. From the drop-down menu, click Settings.
Step 2: On the Settings screen, scroll all the way down to the section labeled Mode. By default, the color mode is set to Use system setting and so the app chooses up the color scheme of the system. Overwrite it by clicking Light to switch to a white-colored theme and background, or Dark to choose a theme that is the opposite (black).
To apply the change, you must exit the Photos app. Just close the window to continue. Step 3: Restart the Photos app and you should see the change in theme and background color immediately.
And you guessed it right – you have to go through the same process when you want to change the background color. A simple toggle on the UI itself would have worked wonders, and here we hope Microsoft implements that or something similar in the future.
Change the system color mode
If you want to have a unified experience with other native Windows 10 apps that support color modes, such as Mail, Windows Store, Windows Settings, etc., consider changing the system color scheme yourself to achieve the same result. If you have the Windows 10 January update installed, the following steps will also affect the default color in File Explorer. Note: Make sure the Use System Setting option is selected in the Settings panel of the Photos app. Otherwise, the app’s original color settings will overwrite the system colors. Step 1: Click the notification area in the notification area, then click All Settings.
Step 2: In the Windows Settings app, click the tile labeled Personalization.
Step 3: Click on the side tab labeled Colors.
Step 4: Then scroll down to the section labeled Choose your default app mode, then select your preferred background color.
While the Windows Settings app will immediately reflect the color mode change, the Photos app, if already open, will need to be restarted to display the new theme and background color.
Regarding Edit and Create mode
Despite its many flaws, the Photos app offers many useful tools that you can use to edit and flavor up Pictures. The Edit and Create mode you need to switch to features a completely dark background. And unfortunately that doesn’t change regardless of the change you make in the Photos app or the system color settings. And that is quite absurd. Especially when editing transparent images that consist only of black colors, because you can’t see anything in the first place. In the meantime, consider using alternative image editors for cases where the Photos app makes you feel sad.
