If you don’t want to load the page into your developer tool, this is a handy way to experiment.

Dreamweaver and similar tools have a built-in browser emulator that simulates what a design will look like in different browsers. As good as they are, they are not always exact and you often find when starting a site that what looked great in your developer tool looks slightly different in a standalone browser. Usually you start the site on an internal web server and test it in a browser before going live for this reason. If a page is already live or you just want to try something, you don’t need to copy it and load it into your development tool, just use the browser’s Developer Tool. I’m using Firefox so I’ll show you how to use that. However, Chrome is much the same. You should see your page split in half, with a new panel at the bottom with some code in it. This code is the driving force behind the page you selected. Various page elements are accessible through the tabs at the top of the bottom tab. For example, we see Inspector, Console, Debugger, Style Editor and so on in Firefox. If you move your cursor over the lines in the bottom pane, you will see different parts of the web page highlighted. The line of code you are on during the highlight is the code affecting that part of the page.
If you want to play with how the page looks, try Style Editor. If you want to play with how the page works, try Console or Accessibility. If you want to remove bugs or fix a problem, use Console or Debugger
Performance is useful for onsite SEO, but memory, network, and storage aren’t used that often. Remember, you can mess around in Developer Tools as much as you want and it won’t affect the site. Any changes will only be made to the way the page is displayed in your individual browser, you have no influence on the website itself. Once you close the tool, all changes will be lost.
Make changes to a page
Now that you know that you can change anything you want without affecting the actual website, let’s have a little fun. Find an element on the page you want to edit. You can change a font, a font color, a background image or anything you want. For this example, I’m going to change the font color of the banner header. Your change will be displayed dynamically when you complete the change. You can change the color, size, font, background and everything about the font. You cannot save the work, but your changes are preserved during that session. You can change everything about the page, which is ideal if you have an idea and want to quickly review it before shooting up all your development apps. All you need to do is remember what changes you made and where as you cannot save them here. You need to take a screenshot or commit the changes and replicate them in your developer tools to hold them. Editing a web page in your browser is a useful way to experiment or play with pages.
