Guide: How to Directly Open A Downloaded File in a Browser
Have you ever wished your browser could open a file you downloaded from the internet directly instead of downloading it to your computer? If you did, today is your lucky day. We will see how to open almost any type of file directly in our browser using an online service called rollApp (that’s how they like to write their name). rollApp is currently supported for Firefox and Chrome, but before we see how to install and use, let’s see how it works.
How rollApp works
I have not found any official documentation online that could tell me how exactly rollApp can open hundreds of different file types directly in the browser. However, as far as I understood, I think that rollApp acts as a server on which various applications like LibreOffice, DIA, etc.
When a user tries to open a file with rollApp, he needs the help of these applications stored on his server. rollApp also connects to one of your cloud storage accounts, which serves as the starting point for these applications.
Install RollApp
Before you can use rollApp on your computer, you must register for an account. You can use Google, Twitter, Facebook and some other third party accounts to create an account in rollApp. rollApp only reads your email address, country and language from your connected account. After you log in, rollApp will ask you to connect to one of your online storage accounts. Currently, rollApp only supports Google Drive, Dropbox and 4Shared and if you want to open and edit files directly in your browser, you must have an account in one of these.
While connecting to the cloud storage account, you will be prompted to create a new folder and access to this specific folder is only granted to rollApp. rollApp will use this folder to download, modify and save the file. After connecting the account, you can go ahead and install the extension in the browser of your choice from the rollApp plugin page. The service will automatically detect the browser you are using and redirect you to the appropriate store. After downloading the extension and restarting your browser, the next time you come across a download link whose file type is supported by rollApp, you will see a pop-up frame that will ask you if you want to download the file or open it directly in the browser. As soon as you open a file in the browser, rollApp needs some time to connect to the application on the server.
Note: If you do not see a new window in which you open the desired file with rollApp, you must change the settings of your popupup blocker. In order for rollApp to open the files, you have to add them to the whitelist of pop-ups.
Conclusion
rollApp may take some time to open the files, but it is certainly the fastest way to see the contents of a file directly in the browser without downloading it. That’s not all, you can also edit the files directly and save it to the cloud account you connected it to. So try out rollApp today and tell us what you think.
