Guide: Fix ‘Cortana Something Went Wrong’ Issue on Windows 10
Virtual assistants are designed to make our lives easy. You can use them to open apps, add tasks, search the web, ask questions, and a lot more. But sometimes they start to have tantrums (just like people) and eventually fail to do their job. Recently, I used Cortana, Microsoft’s personal digital assistant, on my Windows 10 PC to add a to-do item when it got the error “Something went wrong.” Please try again later. Interestingly, some questions worked, while others failed. That is an example of the error. Sometimes Cortana will display the same error just after tapping the Cortana microphone icon, even before you say anything. If you are also facing the problem then things are about to change forever. Here are some ways to fix that problem. Let’s start.
1. Restart your computer
If you are experiencing the problem for the first time, try the golden method of restarting your PC.
2. Log out of your account
Sometimes the problem is related to your account. So try to log out and see if that fixes the problem. To do this, follow these steps: Step 1: Click on the Start menu icon to open it.
Step 2: From the Start menu, click the user icon and then click Sign Out.
Step 3: Then sign in again with your Microsoft account information. Hopefully, Cortana should be up and runs perfectly for you.
3. Use the same languages
Language plays a vital role in Cortana’s functioning. It is recommended to keep the device language and voice language the same as for the supported country or region language. Follow these steps to change these languages: Step 1: From the Start menu, go to Settings.
Step 2: Click Time and Language.
Step 3: Go to the Language section and choose a supported language for Cortana under the Windows display language.
Step 4: Go to the Region option and make sure Country or region is set to a supported country.
Step 5: Finally, click on the Speech section and check if the language under Speech Language is the same as the language in Step 3.
4. Change the Cortana language
Even if the above languages have stayed the same, some Cortana features may not work at times. You need to check your Cortana settings and use a supported language. Here are the steps to achieve that. Step 1: Click Settings under Start menu.
Step 2: Click Cortana.
You can also click the search box next to the Start menu (or the Cortana icon) and click the settings gear icon to go directly to Cortana settings.
Step 3: Under the Talk to Cortana section, scroll down and change the Cortana language. It should preferably match the language set in the above method.
5. Troubleshoot Cortana
Microsoft provides a built-in troubleshooter that can help you solve many problems. Here are the steps to troubleshoot Cortana. Step 1: Open the Start menu and click the Settings icon on the left.
Step 2: Click Update & Security.
Step 3: In the options on the left, click Troubleshoot.
Step 4: Scroll down under Troubleshoot and click Search and index. Then press run the troubleshooter button
Step 5: Follow the onscreen instructions to start the troubleshooting process. Restart your PC when done. Or open Control Panel and go to Troubleshoot. Click on View all in the left sidebar. That will load a list of available troubleshooters. Double-click Search and Index to start the troubleshooting process.
6. Update Windows
Sometimes the problem arises from a bug in the Windows update. If you’ve tried all of the above methods, check if there’s an available Windows update. To do this, go to Settings in the Start menu. Click Update and Security.
Then click Check for updates or if an update is available and downloaded, click Install now.
Bonus Tip: Useful Cortana commands
Cortana can save a lot of clicks and give your fingers a rest to perform the basic interactive actions with a Windows PC. Here are some helpful commands that will help you get used to Cortana quickly.
Open Apps and Settings
You can use Cortana to do all of your digital work. For example, you can use it to run apps on your laptop by saying ‘Open Candy Crush’ or ‘Go to Control Panel’. Also use it to directly launch settings like ‘Open Keyboard Settings’.
Control settings
Not only can you access settings, but you can even control them. Use the commands ‘Turn Bluetooth on / off’, ‘Turn Wi-Fi on / off or Airplane mode’ to name a few examples.
Add notes in OneNote
If you’re a regular user of the OneNote app, Cortana integrates with that too. Say the command “Make a note” or “Make a note” followed by the actual note text. It is saved directly in OneNote. Likewise, Cortana helps you translate text, do math, convert currency, define words, and even tells you jokes and facts. Now that your Cortana is up and running, check out these handy everyday Cortana commands.
Goodbye Mr. Error!
In my case, the problem was with the language. Changing the Cortana language immediately fixed the problem and allowed me to add my tasks using Cortana. Note that the tasks in Cortana are now integrated with Microsoft To-Do, a cross-platform task management tool. It is available on iPhone, Android and also has a web version.
